Charging on each utility
On Xcel, charge outside 5–9 pm on non-holiday weekdays, and ask about Xcel’s EV wiring rebate, which has been tied to enrolling in its charging program. United Power and CORE members should ask their co-op about current EV rates or programs, which are set independently.
Newer homes, easier installs
Homes built in the last decade in Thornton, Brighton and Commerce City often have 200-amp service and a garage close to the panel, which keeps installs at the lower end of the range. Older ranches may need a load calculation and sometimes a panel upgrade.
Pairing with solar or backup
If you plan to add solar, sizing it for your car’s annual miles is simple math, and we include it in the design. A bidirectional system — from about $19,000 — lets a compatible EV back up the house. The federal §30C charger credit ended after June 30, 2026.

Do United Power members get a special EV rate?
Ask United Power for its current offerings; co-op EV programs change and are separate from Xcel’s.
How much solar do I need to cover my EV?
Roughly 2 to 3 kW of panels for a typical commuter’s annual driving, depending on miles and vehicle efficiency. Our EV fuel-cost calculator gives a closer figure.
Who permits a charger in Thornton or Westminster?
The city’s building department. Unincorporated addresses go through Adams County’s E-Permit Center.
Is there a federal tax credit for my charger?
Not anymore. The §30C credit ended for chargers placed in service after June 30, 2026.
