Your EV as shutoff insurance
Many modern EVs carry 60–100+ kWh of battery — several times a Powerwall. With a compatible vehicle and a bidirectional charging system (from about $19,000 installed), that energy can run your house during a shutoff. SigEnergy also offers a bidirectional DC charger as a roughly $3,500 add-on to its battery system.
The catch is the car has to be home and charged when the power goes out. Xcel usually warns before a planned shutoff, which helps: charge fully the night before.
Condos, townhomes and older houses
Boulder’s older bungalows and many Louisville and Lafayette townhomes have smaller panels or shared parking, which complicates a charger. Load-management chargers and smart panels can often avoid a service upgrade, and HOA-controlled parking needs board approval before we can install.
Rates and incentives
Xcel customers should schedule charging outside the 5–9 pm weekday peak. Longmont customers have their own rate structure. The federal §30C charger credit ended for chargers placed in service after June 30, 2026; utility rebates may still apply, so check with your utility before buying.
