Solar & batteries with Yampa Valley Electric Association

Yampa Valley Electric limits how much a home can export, not how many panels it can have: residential systems are capped at 10 kW of export at the inverter, with no DC limit, and solar-plus-battery systems must stay within that export cap. That makes a battery the natural way to add capacity here. YVEA’s board has chosen not to offer solar rebates, and the co-op is working on a new rate with a small 5–9 p.m. demand charge planned for 2027.

Policy NEMV4 (rev. 4, June 30, 2026): export limited at the inverter to 10 kW residential and 25 kW other classes, with no DC size limit. Excess goes to a Banked Usage account and consumed generation offsets at the retail rate. The leftover bank is paid annually; the policy and the web page describe the timing and rate differently. Installers must be NABCEP-certified or have 60+ hours of training; plug-in solar isn’t eligible. Application fee $250 for systems ≤25 kW.

Time-of-use: No residential time-of-use or EV rate found. YVEA has proposed a three-part rate adding a transmission demand charge of no more than $2/kW, set by the highest one-hour demand between 5 and 9 p.m.; the board was to vote on the structure in August 2026, with implementation planned from spring 2027.

An export cap, not a panel cap

YVEA’s NEMV4 policy limits a home’s export to 10 kW at the inverter and sets no DC limit. In practice you can install more panels than a 10 kW inverter could push to the grid, as long as the system never exports more than 10 kW — and a battery is the cleanest way to do that, soaking up the extra and running the house after dark.

YVEA also sets installer qualifications (NABCEP certification or 60+ hours of training) and doesn’t allow plug-in solar. Net-metering applications up to 25 kW cost $250.

Snow, short winter days and Steamboat roofs

Routt and Moffat county winters are long, snowy and short on daylight, so winter production drops hard and summer carries the year. Steep metal roofs shed snow well; ground mounts let you clear panels yourself. We design racking for mountain snow loads and model production month by month rather than quoting a single annual number.

A demand charge on the way

YVEA has proposed adding a transmission demand charge of no more than $2 per kW, based on your highest one-hour demand between 5 and 9 p.m., with implementation planned from spring 2027. It’s small, but it’s the kind of charge a battery or a scheduled EV charger can avoid — worth designing for now.

How big can my solar system be on YVEA?

There’s no DC panel limit; export is limited to 10 kW at the inverter for homes. Solar-plus-battery systems must stay within that export cap.

Does YVEA serve Oak Creek?

No — YVEA says Oak Creek is not in its service area. Oak Creek has its own town electric utility.

Can I use a plug-in balcony solar kit on YVEA?
