Solar roof shingles and integrated solar roofs

A solar shingle or solar tile is a small photovoltaic module shaped to lay in courses like a roofing product, with non-solar look-alike tiles filling the rest of the roof. Integrated solar roofs go further: the whole roof surface is a system of matched active and inactive tiles, flashing, and underlayment from one manufacturer, installed by that manufacturer’s certified crews. The appeal is real — no racking, no visible frames, a uniform surface.

Under the surface it is still silicon photovoltaics feeding an inverter, with the same physics as a rack-mounted panel. The differences are in cell area per square foot, how heat is shed, how many electrical connections sit under the roofing, and how much of the roof is active. Those differences drive nearly everything that follows.

Our conventional residential installs run $2.80–$3.25 per watt installed. A new asphalt roof added to that project is priced by the square, and doing both at once saves a mobilization and keeps the roof warranty and the solar warranty with one company. Integrated solar roofs are quoted as a whole roof, but when you divide the active wattage into the price, the per-watt figure is commonly two times or more what panels cost — prices vary by region, roof complexity, and how much of the roof is active, so ask any vendor to show you the watts and do the division yourself.

The gap is structural, not a markup. You are paying for a premium roofing product across the entire surface, plus the labor of a specialized crew, plus lower-efficiency modules. A homeowner who wants a new roof and 8 kW of solar can usually get both with conventional panels for well under what an equivalent integrated roof costs. As of September 2026 the 30% federal homeowner credit no longer applies to either option, which makes the per-watt gap more visible than it was.

A modern 400–440 W panel covers about 20 square feet, roughly 20–22 watts per square foot. Solar shingles and tiles generally deliver less per square foot of active surface, because the cells are smaller, the inactive borders are larger, and the modules run hotter lying flat against the deck without an air gap. On a roof with limited south-facing area — most Front Range homes — that difference can mean an integrated roof produces less than a panel array would from the same slope.

Colorado also adds snow and hail. Rack-mounted panels sit a few inches off the deck, shed snow along a smooth glass face, and are rated to UL 2218 Class 4 hail impact on the products we install. Solar shingle products publish their own hail ratings; ask for the specific test standard and class, and ask separately what the warranty says about hail, because roofing warranties and module warranties often treat hail differently. After a hailstorm on the Front Range, a damaged panel is swapped in an hour; a damaged integrated tile is a roofing repair by a certified crew.

Conventional panels from Tesla, Enphase, and SigEnergy-compatible systems are serviced by many companies across Colorado. Integrated solar roofs are installed and serviced by a short list of manufacturer-certified crews, and scheduling in a hail-prone state after a storm can be slow. If the manufacturer changes its product line or exits the market — which has happened more than once with solar shingle makers — replacement active tiles may be hard to find, and the roof is only as good as its weakest replacement part.

We also do not take over or service systems installed by other companies, and neither do most installers. That is one more reason we recommend a product ecosystem with broad support rather than one that ties you to a single vendor for the life of the roof.

For homeowners who care most about the look, all-black panels flush-mounted with black racking on a dark architectural shingle roof are visually quiet from the street. It is not invisible, but it is a long way from the silver-frame arrays of 2012, and it produces more electricity per dollar than any integrated roof we have seen quoted in Colorado.
