What the price looks like, before and after the city rebate
At $2.80–$3.25/W installed, a 6 kW system is about $16,800–$19,500 and an 8 kW system about $22,400–$26,000. Fort Collins Utilities pays $300 per kW-DC up to $1,500, so almost any full-size home system hits the cap; that knocks the 8 kW example down to roughly $20,900–$24,500.
Two things are not in that math anymore. The 30% federal homeowner credit (§25D) ended for systems finished after December 31, 2025, and solar panels don’t qualify for Colorado’s battery credit. If you see a Fort Collins quote that still subtracts “30% federal credit” from a purchased system, treat the whole quote with suspicion.
Why sizing matters more here than on Xcel
Because Fort Collins Utilities credits exports at the rate active when they happen, energy you use yourself is worth more than energy you push to the grid. An array sized to 100% of your annual kWh tends to over-export at midday; a slightly smaller array, or one paired with a battery, often has a better cost per dollar saved.

Cash, loan, or lease in Fort Collins
With §25D gone, leases and PPAs are the one residential route where federal credit value still flows — the owner can claim §48E if the system is placed in service by December 31, 2027. Our lease and PPA offers typically run 20–30% below the retail utility rate, around $125–$240 a month with a 0–3% annual escalator. Verify current terms, and note that Fort Collins caps leased systems smaller than owned ones.
